cheap shots from the gallery
wear us down
over time.
at first, we are prepared,
and the initial attacks
meet the resistance
of zeal and determination.
the questions come
and we listen
and we learn,
or we laugh.
but, like a boxer
tiring from
repeated body blows,
we weaken.
after we’ve taken much
we would love
to retaliate.
we need the Spirit of Christ
that sustained Him
and kept Him quiet
and kept Him going
to the cross
to enable us
to let God be God.
trying to take His place
will kill us faster
than the
cheap shots from the gallery.
