Some mornings feel level. We wake rested. The schedule makes sense. Relationships are peaceful. The day unfolds almost as expected.
Other mornings feel like walking across loose stones. One phone call changes everything. One conversation unsettles us. One piece of news rearranges the day.
Life rarely stays level for long.
That was one of the ideas behind Equilibrium: 31 Ways to Stay Balanced on Life’s Uneven Surfaces.
I have learned that balance is not something we find once and keep forever. We adjust. We stumble. We steady ourselves. We keep walking.
A person walking across an uneven trail does not stop every few seconds because the ground is imperfect. The walker watches the path, adjusts each step, and continues forward.
Perhaps life requires something similar. We cannot control every surface beneath our feet. But we can pay attention to how we walk.
Sometimes balance means resting. Sometimes it means asking for help. Sometimes it means saying no. Sometimes it means admitting that we are carrying too much. Sometimes it means remembering that yesterday’s strength may not be enough for today’s journey.
And that is not failure. It is simply being human.
I have become increasingly grateful for people who do not expect life to be easy. They understand that everyone walks on uneven ground at some point. They do not shame us when we stumble. They walk beside us.
Maybe that is what we need to offer one another.
Less judgment. More grace.
Less advice. More presence.
Less pretending. More honesty.
The path ahead of you may not be level. Mine isn’t. But perhaps we do not need perfectly level ground to live a meaningful life. Perhaps we simply need enough grace for the next step.
